WindHistory.com Website

Like the post title says, go to:
http://windhistory.com
... for a map of North American sites (seems like mainly airports though?), with graphs showing -- by month -- frequency by direction, and average speed by direction, along with percent of time totally calm.
You can also click the play button in the middle of the month selector to show how the winds vary during the course of a year.

  1. Nice find. They get all of their data from the NOAA archives and do monthly averages.

http://gis.ncdc.noaa.gov/map/cdo/ is a tool that I have recently started using. It lets you see 5 minute intervals of NEXRAD data. You can graph some weather station data with the tool as well. Wind speed is there but direction is not.
It sure would be nice to have better access to weather station data.

A cool site that gives an excellent visual representation of the near-term forecast of wind. http://hint.fm/wind/
